The 2013 Ivey Awards, the Twin Cities’ celebration of the best of theatre, have been awarded! How many have you seen?
Lifetime Achievement Award: playwright Jeffrey Hatcher, nationally-renowned playwright, the Lifetime Achievement Award, Aisle Say reviews of a few of his plays: Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club, Standing on Ceremony (contributor), Compleat Female Stage Beauty, What’s the Word For. Congratulations to a great playwright!
Emerging Artist Award: performer, director and playwright Ricardo Vázquez. Aisle Say reviews of just a couple of his performances in fairly minor roles: The Seven, Next to Normal. We’re looking forward to seeing more of his work!
Overall Excellence: In the Next Room, Jungle Theater. Our AisleSay review says it invites us to “bring the next room into the real world.”
Overall Excellence: Milly & Tillie, Open Eye Figure Theatre.
Directing: Peter Beard & James Napoleon Stone, Hamlet (Theatre Coup d’Etat).
Musical Direction: Raymond Berg, Urinetown: The Musical (Jungle Theater). Our review agrees it was the “runaway hit of the summer.”
Directing: Peter Brosius, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (Children’s Theatre Company).
Sound Design: Michael Croswell, Sound Design, Misterman (Frank Theatre).
Acting: Ensemble, Clybourne Park (Guthrie Theater), which our review calls “truly stunning.”
Acting: Ensemble, Two Sugars, Room for Cream (Hennepin Theatre Trust); our review says, “the writing is incisive and comic timing impeccable, seeming effortless”.
Choreography: Michael Matthew Ferrell, Singin’ in the Rain (Bloomington Civic Theatre).
Playwrighting: Katherine Glover, Alissa M. Shellito & Jeri Weiss, Freshwater Theatre Goes Back to High School (Freshwater Theatre Company).
Acting: Dean Holt, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (Children’s Theatre Company)
Acting: Craig Johnson, Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde (Walking Shadow Theatre Company). Our review says that his performance “[constructs] Wilde as Art itself.”
