If you like R&B, history, or both, then you’ll love Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations. This lively jukebox musical chronicles the trials and triumphs of one of the most influential music groups of the 20th century. By the time curtain call rolls around, you’ll know the Temptations like you never have before.
Every member of this incredibly strong cast gives a wonderfully energetic performance, from beginning to end. They really do justice to Sergio Trujillo’s tony-winning choreography, which plays a huge role in elevating every number from concert to spectacle. Paul Tazewell’s costume design also adds to the spectacle, particularly when the Supremes join the Temptations to sing “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me.” The Supremes’ plunging, perfectly tailored gowns glitter with countless, cascading stripes of sequins, creating a fabulous tableau.
Jalen Harris, playing Eddie Kendricks, is a particular standout. His consistently excellent vocals and electric stage presence make him impossible not to watch. Harris positively oozes charisma from his first entrance to his final bow.
With its beautiful set design, its unforgettable choreography, and its cast of powerful performers, Ain’t Too Proud will have you laughing, crying, and clapping along to a bona fide buffet of some of the best songs of the last 60 years.
